Gilgit: The Gilgit-Baltistan government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding – MoU with Gansu (China’s Province) for collaboration in reforming high-mountain agriculture with technology and the latest machinery.

According to the details, the MoU aims to boost agriculture under challenging terrains like Gilgit-Baltistan and facilitate and empower local farmers to produce various crops. The land of Gilgit-Baltistan shares a border with China and plays a vital role in infrastructure development under CPEC.

The significant MoU was signed during the visit of the Gilgit-Baltistan eight-member delegation. Muhammad Anwar, the Agriculture Minister, led the delegation. At the event, he said the MoU is a significant milestone in revolutionizing the province’s agricultural sector. With high technology, the production of critical crops, including potato, wheat, buckwheat, and maize, will be increased.

Mr. Khadim Hussain, coordinator of the GB Economic Transformation Initiative and one of the delegation members, highlighted the cooperation objectives. He stressed the promotion of the vision to strengthen the agricultural sector of GB for food security and boost development in human resources and livestock.

According to the agreement highlights, Gansu’s Agricultural and Mechanical Company will provide essential machinery to the province government while supporting relevant activities like harvesting, sowing and silage.

The company will also be responsible for training local farmers of the region. It will take initiatives in the livestock, fisheries and agricultural sectors of Gilgit-Baltistan.
