Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project Back on Track
HARIPUR: The construction activities for the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project have recommenced following a five-day hiatus.
The Chinese construction company PCCCL, contracted for the civil work of the powerhouse of the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, has instructed its workforce to return to their respective duties.
Upon investigation, Aslam Adil, the General Secretary of the Awami Labour Union, has confirmed that the aforementioned Chinese company has convened all employees previously notified of the work suspension via office order No PCCCL/T5-Admin/2024-019, dated March 26, 2024.
As per Aslam Adil, both Chinese and Pakistani workers are currently engaged in work amidst heightened security.
In response to queries, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ghazi Raja Bashir Khan verified that the PCCCL had recalled its workers, and work on the T5 project resumed on Monday.
He indicated that security measures have been intensified within the project and residential areas of the Chinese and along their travel routes, aligning with revised security protocols mandated by higher authorities.
The PCCCL, also known as PowerChina, has been entrusted with completing the civil work for the 1530 MW hydropower project at the 5th tunnel of the Tarbela Dam. The project is slated for completion by May 2026.
