300MW hydropower plant to be built in KP

The Asian Development Bank announced to extend a loan of $300 million to aid the construction cost of building a 300MW hydropower plant on the Kunhar River near Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The plant, which will incorporate seismic strengthening and climate-proofing measures will add 1143GWh of clean energy annually to Pakistan’s energy mix and improve the country’s energy security.  

This plant will substantially increase the revenue of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization. Pakistan is rich in hydropower resources, according to Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), there is 60,000 MW of hydropower potential in the country, of which only 7,320 MW has been developed.
