WAPDA is Set to Start Work on Mohmand Dam in April
Islamabad: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is set to start work on the diversion of Water for Mohmand Dam in April 2024. For this purpose, the authority is set to divert the water of the river Swat for the facilitation of the construction activities at the Dam site.
WAPDA Chairman Engr. Lt. Gen. Sajjad Ghani (retd) inspected various aspects of the project during his visit to the Dam site in district Mohmand of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). During the visit, he was also accompanied by the consultants and contractors, advisor of the project, GM, and the project director of Mohmand Dam. He also reviewed the progress of the construction work on the Spillway, Diversion of Tunnels, and Powerhouse. After the site visit, they discussed the status of the construction of 12 sites at the project site office. Moreover, the chairman was provided with details about the diversion scheme, slop stabilization, works at the powerhouse and irrigation tunnels, and finishing works on the roads.
The Mohmand Dam will have a storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet enough for irrigation of 18,237 acres of new land, and 160,000 acres of existing land. Moreover, the project is expected to generate 2.86 billion units of electricity annually as a result of 800 MW capacity. The project will be completed in 2026, and the estimated benefits from the Mohmand Dam are PKR 51.6 billion annually.
