Mari Petroleum Announces Major Oil Discovery in Sindh
Ghotki: Mari Petroleum Company Limited (PSX: MARI) has discovered oil reserves by drilling at Shawal-l well in Mari D&PL, Sindh.
With the finding, the region’s focus shifted from gas production to a new phase of oil exploration, marking a significant turning point in its history. Drilled on January 27, 2024, the Shawal-l well successfully penetrated the Ghazij Formation to a depth of 1,136 meters. After testing, the well produced 1,040 barrels of crude oil with a 12 percent Basic Sediment & Water (BS&W) concentration and an API gravity of about 30 degrees.
Additionally, the well produced 2.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of associated gas at a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 953 pounds per square inch (Psi) using a 32/64 inch choke size.
This recent oil discovery in Mari D&PL is a milestone for the region and a substantial development in the energy sector. Since 1967, the area has been exclusively focused on gas production. However, with this new finding, the Operator of Mari D&PL, MPCL, has diversified their production portfolio, which deserves credit and acknowledgment.
