HKH Region Housing Vast Renewable Energy Potential, Report Finds

A new report by ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development) finds that the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region has huge renewable energy potential, but clean energy makes up only 6.1% of its supply. Fossil fuels dominate electricity production in HKH countries, including Pakistan (76%), India (77%), and Bangladesh (98%). The report urges Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan to cooperate on technology, infrastructure, and cross-border energy trade. Stronger collaboration could reduce costs, create jobs, and improve regional stability. Experts said harnessing solar and wind potential can lower energy imports and protect against climate change. ICIMOD is also working on climate-resilient water and energy projects across the region.
